Wade was a petty thief and his cleptomanic tendencies drove the people in the village he lived mad. He rarely stole anything really valuable but in the end, he was blamed for everything that disappeared. One day a petty nobleman visited the village with his entourage of psychophants and serfs. Fate would have it, that a valuable ring belonging to the nobleman got stolen, or at least, disappeared, and naturally Wade's name came up as the possible culprit.
The nobleman feeling the need to statuate an example held a quick mock trial and sentenced him to die by hanging. No matter how much Wade pleaded for his life and swore he was innocent the nobleman would not back down.
In the rain that was falling ever harder he was draged by a leash to a large oak on a hill overlooking the village. The rain washed away his tears of fear and anger and he kept mumbling and mewling to himself.
"Any last words?" the nobleman shouted to be heard over the rain and the wind hammered the water into Wade's face, making it hard for him to hear. "I swear by every god I know and that might take a liking to me that I'll improve, if You just let me go! I will change, I swear! Please for all that is good, just let me live! I need to live! I need to do great deeds! Please!". The nobleman's entourage laughed hard at this and the nobleman looked as if he might just decide to let him go but then his face twisted in a wicked grin and said, "Maybe in your next life, bye-bye!". He signaled his men to pull him up. Pain and asphyxiation was all Wade was aware of and a darkness came sneaking up on him with a blend of multicolored light. Suddenly a bright light cracked down on the site and Wade knew no more.
When he woke up, it was still raining a bit. He could smell smoke and burnt flesh. And the Pain! His neck felt like it was on fire. He gently liftet his head from the ground and peered about. Bodies laid strewn about, some of them still on fire. The great oak was split in twain and was likewise on fire. All the people that had wanted to hang him lay dead, well, almost. He could hear a sobbing groaning noice from the nobleman. Wades first thought was to stab him and then run away, but something... something stopped him. He remembered his last statement before they tried to hang him. He found that he actually ment every word. Instead he went up to the nobleman, while he pondered the fact that he was barely touched by the lightningstrike, and lowly said to the nobleman, "Know this! I could have killed you now, but I will not. I grant you the life that you wouldn't give to me. Know this! I take your weapons and your purse. I count us as being quit now. I did not take your ring and neither will I take your life". With that he slinked away into the dim light.
But ever after that fateful day, his neck was red and scarred from the rope and therefore he wears a scarf around his neck to hide the nasty mark.
Let me know what you think!
